Biography

Mattijs is counsel at Geradin Partners.

Prior to joining Geradin Partners, Mattijs worked as a competition lawyer at leading Dutch law firms for more than a decade. Mattijs has worked on a wide range of competition, competition litigation and regulatory matters. Matters that Mattijs was involved in include merger control proceedings before the European Commission and Dutch Competition Authority, representing a global electronics manufacturer and a global cargo airline in competition litigations before the Dutch courts and representing a European airline in damages proceedings against Schiphol Airport. Furthermore, Mattijs advises companies on the Dutch FDI rules and was involved in competition and consumer law investigations.

Mattijs has provided lectures on various competition law topics at Utrecht University, speaks at international conferences, and regularly provides training sessions for clients and industry associations. Since 2020, Mattijs has been listed for competition law in the Legal 500 EMEA.

  • Advising Corendon on the sales of its tour operator activities to Triton/Sunweb in merger control proceedings before the European Commission and the Dutch Competition Authority (phase II)
  • Representing a global electronics manufacturer in two parallel follow-on damages claims before the Dutch courts
  • Representing a global cargo airline in a follow-on damages claim before the Amsterdam court
  • Advising a leading industrial manufacturer on several merger control proceedings before the Dutch Competition Authority
  • Advising a German industrial company on a successful leniency application with the Dutch Competition Authority
  • Advising an IT industry association on the VBER evaluation and revision process by the European Commission
  • Advising a Dutch energy company on a consumer law investigation
  • Representing a Dutch airline in a State Aid matter before the EU General Court
  • Representing a European airline in a damages claim against Schiphol Airport
  • Advising companies in the fashion and retail sectors on the application of Article 101 TFEU to distribution and licensing models

Mattijs Baneke has registered competition law in the Netherlands Bar’s register of legal practice areas (rechtsgebiedenregister). Based on this registration, he is required to obtain ten training credits per calendar year in this legal practice area in accordance with the standards set by the Netherlands Bar.
