Biography

Patrick is a Partner at Geradin Partners, where he currently advises on various competition litigation matters (including the Ad Tech collective action filed against Google in the CAT on behalf of UK publishers; and a collective action filed on behalf of UK app developers against Apple).

Prior to joining Geradin Partners, Patrick was Counsel in the Antitrust Litigation team at Freshfields,advising on complex competition, commercial and public law disputes and internal and regulatory corporate investigations.

Patrick has extensive experience in competition-related regulatory investigations and follow-on litigation. He has acted for clients in the financial services, telecommunications, broadcasting and industrial sectors in relation to both UK and multi-jurisdictional cartel investigations and associated immunity / leniency applications; and follow-on litigation before the English High Court and CAT. He has significant dawn raid experience, having attended various inspections conducted by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) and the Financial Conduct Authority, and regularly advises clients in relation to competition compliance and dawn raid best practice. He also has experience of representing individuals subject to investigation by the CMA and can assist company directors in their preparations for interviews and hearings.

Having qualified at Freshfields in 2013, Patrick left in 2018 (before moving back to Freshfields in 2022) to work as Assistant Legal Director at the CMA. While at the CMA Patrick worked on various matters across the CMA’s Policy & International, Cartels, Markets and Antitrust Directorates. This included advising on the CMA’s CA98 investigation into suspected anti-competitive arrangements in relation to UK government bonds; working on the CMA’s legal preparations for Brexit, advising the UK Government on all legislation and guidance required to prepare the UK’s competition regime for life outside the EU; and advising on the CMA’s ‘Mobile Ecosystems’ market study, with related advice to case teams in relation to the CMA’s broadening digital and ‘Big Tech’ portfolio. 

Patrick also has an active pro bono practice, having acted for several NGOs (including before the Supreme Court) on a series of public interest interventions relating to asylum, immigration, homelessness and rights of the child cases.

Experience

  • Acting for Volvo/Renault Trucks in the co-ordination of its Europe-wide defence of claims arising from the European Commission’s decision relating to the trucks industry, including in litigation before the UK High Court and the CAT.
  • Advising BT on the CMA’s CA98 investigation into suspected anti-competitive behaviour relating to freelance labour in the production and broadcasting of sports content.
  • Advising a global construction chemicals company in relation to the CMA’s investigation into the supply of chemicals for use in construction (including coordination of related investigations by various international competition regulators).
  • Acting for ABB in High Court litigation following on from its participation in the GIS and Cables cartels.
  • Advising a major international investment bank on the European Commission’s and other regulators’ investigations into EURIBOR antitrust infringements.
  • Advising a major insurance broker in relation to investigations carried out by multiple regulators concerning aviation and aerospace insurance and reinsurance broking products.
  • Advising the UK Government on all competition law legislation and guidance required as a result of the Brexit Referendum vote, the Withdrawal Agreement and the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement.
  • Advising the UK Government on measures taken in response to the Covid-19 crisis, including producing related external CMA guidance.
  • Advising on the CMA’s Mobile Ecosystems market study.
  • Advising various clients in relation to the impact of the UK’s DMCC Act, including responses to Government and CMA consultations.
  • Acting pro bono for various clients including Freedom from Torture, Shelter, The Office of the Children’s Commissioner for England & Wales, The AIRE Centre, Save The Children, JUSTICE, Amicus, Reprieve, and the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, including a number of third party interventions in the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court.
